We all want restaurant-style basmati rice at home that is soft grainy, and flavorful. There is something special about that perfect chew without it being too soggy, sticky, or undercooked.

With this recipe, you can finally enjoy the perfect basmati rice with curries, stews, or vegetarian recipes, or even incorporate a few tips learned here into making your next perfect pot of biryani.

In this recipe, I use the absorption method rather than the straining method, which equates to less work, complications, and time.

Here’s your checklist. Ensure that each of these steps is followed, which will guarantee perfect rice:

1. Rinse the Basmati Rice: Begin by thoroughly rinsing the Basmati rice until the water runs clear, about five rinses. This process eliminates any residual dirt and excess starch which can lead to stickiness.

2. Soak the Rice: Place the rinsed rice in a bowl and cover it with approximately 6 cups of water, ensuring the rice is fully submerged. Allow it to soak for 20 minutes, minimum, and up to 40 minutes, but not longer than that.

3. Prepare the Flavor Base: To enhance the flavor of your rice, add the chosen spices including cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, cloves, black cardamom pod, bay leaf, and black peppercorns, along with salt.

4. Add the Rice: Once the water comes to a boil, thoroughly drain the soaked rice and gently add it to the pot with the aromatic spices and seasoned water. Give it a gentle stir to combine.

5. Initial Boiling: Bring the pot to a boil over medium-high heat and cook for approximately 5–10 minutes, or until the grains become visible. Boiling the rice at high heat for a longer time will break up the grains.

6. Simmer and Cover: Reduce the heat to a low simmer, ensuring the lid is tightly closed. Let it cook for roughly 20–25 minutes without disturbing it. No peeking or checking! Use a cover with a glass lid if you are a peeker and a sneaker.

7. Resting Period: Again, resist the urge to peek inside the pot. After the 20-minute covered cooking time, let the rice rest for an additional 10–20 minutes with the lid securely in place.

8. Fluff and Serve: Gently fluff the perfectly cooked Basmati rice with a fork, allowing the grains to separate beautifully. Serve and enjoy!
