Najar is the Hindustani word for Evil Eye, or Maljou, malju, correctly spelled as Mal Yeaux – (French Creole), pronounced “mal joo” in Trinidad.
When someone envies you or gives you najar, the evil or bad eye, you are thought to be struck with a case of maljou. Signs of this are feeling sick with no obvious cause or reason, and another indicator is eyebrows that are vertically shaped (standing up as they say in Trinidad). To remove maljou one has to undergo a ritual referred as ‘jharay’. See Jharay.
