Jhoota / Jootha

TermMeaning
Jhoota / Jootha (जूठा)Food or drink that has been touched by someone’s saliva, mouth, spoon, or bite after eating or drinking from it. Often refers to double-dipping, partially eaten food, or sharing from the same utensil or cup.

Note

The concept comes from traditional Indian and Hindu cultural practices surrounding food purity, hygiene, and sharing. In Trinidad and other Indo-Caribbean communities, the term is still commonly used to describe food or drink that someone has already tasted, bitten, sipped, or “put their mouth on.” There is no exact English equivalent, though “saliva-contaminated,” “double-dipped,” or “partially eaten” may convey part of the meaning.
